The leader of the Manitoba Liberal Party says politicians accused of inappropriate behaviour should face possible suspension from the legislature.

Dougald Lamont's comments come after a woman said she was groped and propositioned by Cliff Graydon, a legislature member who was kicked out of the governing Progressive Conservative caucus last month.

Graydon has not responded to the accusation but has previously said he never touched anyone inappropriately.

Lamont says there is currently no way for an elected official to be removed or punished.

He says Manitoba's conflict of interest commissioner should be given more power to investigate ethical matters.

Lamont also says the commissioner should have the power to temporarily suspend the right of members to vote in the chamber and perform other duties.

Graydon was kicked out of the Tory caucus after media reports he made suggestive remarks to female staff. He said at a news conference earlier this month he is only guilty of having an outdated sense of humour.

The 72-year-old now sits as an Independent, and has said he won't run for re-election in 2020.
