2nd man charged in killing of Cyril Weenusk in downtown Winnipeg

A second man has been charged in the downtown Winnipeg beating death of Cyril Weenusk, a father of four visiting from northern Manitoba.

Renelle McDougal, 20, of Winnipeg, has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of the 26-year-old from Oxford House, Man., who was in the city to accompany his father to medical appointments.

McDougal was arrested on July 29, hours after Winnipeg police released videos and photos captured on a downtown surveillance camera.

At the time the images were released, police said the suspectthey were looking formight be a youth.As a result, officersobtained a court order allowing them to temporarily publicize the images.

On Tuesday, policeconfirmed that thesuspect is an adult.

Geordie Wood, 22, is also charged with second-degree murder in connection with Weenusk's death.

Weenusk, from the Bunibonibee Cree Nation in Oxford House, was found injured near Portage Avenue and Donald Street around 3:50 a.m. on July 5. He later died in hospital.

Part of Portage Avenue was closed for seven hours that day as police investigated the attack.

Family members said at the time of the attack, Weenusk was in Winnipeg to accompany his father, who has cancer, to chemotherapy and dialysis treatments.

Police said Weenusk became involved in an altercation with a group of people he did not know.

On Tuesday, police spokesperson Const. Rob Carver said investigators are not actively seeking anyone else in connection with the case.
