Gang members charged in jail assault

Eight inmates of a Manitoba jail have been charged in connection with an assault that sent a fellow inmate to hospital in critical condition.

Milner Ridge Correctional Centreremains under partial lockdown afterthe 33-year-old was mobbed by a group of inmates at about 4:30 p.m. CT on Monday, police said.

The inmate remains in hospital in critical conditionwith life-threatening injuries, police said.

RCMP said on Tuesday that they have charged eight inmates, aged 18 to 20, with aggravated assault.

A sourcetold CBC News that all of the suspects are members of the Indian Posse street gang. Thevictim has no gang ties,the sourcesaid.

Suspect accused in grisly slayings

One suspect, Colton Richard Patchinose,20, isscheduled to be tried in January for a triple homicide that shocked Winnipeggers in March 2008.

He is one of two males accused of entering a home on Alexander Avenue wearingbandannas over their facesand opening fire on people attending a birthday party.

Three people died andthree others were seriously wounded.

Patchinose, who was 18 at the time, was arrested and charged with three counts of first-degree murder and three counts of attempted murder one day after the shootings. Another teenage boy, who was 15 at the time of the shootings, is also accused of the same charges and his case remains before the courts.

Milner Ridge is a minimum to medium security facility with room for 284 male inmates, and is located in the Agassiz Provincial Forest in the Rural Municipality of Lac du Bonnet.

The facility was at maximum capacity on Monday, the government spokesperson said.
