A heat wave in northern and central Manitoba continued on Sunday and will likely hang on for a couple more days.

Large swaths of northern Manitoba, as well as Saskatchewan and Alberta, are under heat warnings. Daytime highs will reach the high 20s and low 30s, with overnight lows in the mid to high teens.

In Manitoba, the heat warnings stretch from The Pas in the south to Brochet in the north, and east to Norway House.

The heat should diminish after Tuesday when an Arctic high-pressure system moves into the region, Environment Canada said.

Smoke from nearby wildfires will make the area hazy and could amplify health impacts of the heat. The Canadian Red Cross helped evacuate 285 people from Poplar River First Nation due to smoke from a wildfire burning 11 kilometres away.

Young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses and people working or exercising outdoors are at the greatest risk in the heat.
