Police chase around Winnipeg hits 120 km/h, ends in Elmwood

A 21-year-old man is in custody after leading police on a high-speed chase in a stolen car around Winnipeg on Tuesday night.

A 21-year-old man is in custodyafter leading police on a high-speed chase in a stolen car around Winnipeg on Tuesday night.

Police said officers first noticed the stolenInfinity G35 around 11:30 p.m. in the North End, on Stella Avenue, but the driver refused to stop and sped off.

A few minutes later, officers spotted it againin the area of Main Street and Jefferson Avenue. The driver once again sped away, but this time police gave chase.

The driver racedthrough several red lights on his way to the North Perimeter Highway, at times hitting speedsas high as 120 km/h.

As police were putting down a spike belt in the area of the Perimeter and Henderson Highway,the suspect slowed down and suddenly drove in their direction, narrowly missing them, according to a police news release.

The suspect then continued northtoward Lockport, where he turned around and headed back to Winnipeg.

Another spike belt was put down and blew outtwo tires on the Infinity, but the driver kept goingsouthbound on Henderson.

Finally, after the tires had torn away, the carwas stopped by policein the area of Talbot Avenue and Watt Street, the Elmwood neighbourhood, around midnight.

The man was arrested andcharged with numerous offences, including dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, assaulting a peace officer, flight from peace officers,driving while disqualified, failing to comply with a probation order, and possession of a weapon.

He remains in custody.
