Police watchdog investigates after man's elbow fractured during Winnipeg police arrest

Manitoba's police watchdog is investigating after a man's elbow was fractured while he was being arrested by Winnipeg police officers last week.

The incident happened on Wednesday night and was reportedthe Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba on Thursday,according to a news release issued Monday.

Police were called to help a woman who was being assaulted on Sargent Avenue between Toronto and Victor streets. A man was found near the scene, the release said.

Officers said force was needed to arrest him, and he was hurt in the process.

He was taken to Health Sciences Centre, where he was diagnosed with a fractured elbow.

According to the IIU, that's considered a serious injury, which it's mandated to investigate.
