The 24-year-old was found in the lower level of ahouse on Hill Streetearly Saturday morning. She was rushed to hospital in critical condition but died from her injuries.

Kyle William Hunter, 25, is charged with second-degree murder, attempted murder, attempt to disarm a peace officer, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and failure to comply with prior court orders.

Jirasek's aunt, Ludmila Jirasek, told CBC Newsshe went numb when she learnedher niece had been killed.

"I could not think. I didn't know what to do. Couldn't believe it," she said Monday.

JanelleJirasek'sFacebook page saysshe used to work at a nursery and was studying early childhood education at Red River College.

"I feel just terrible because she was a fun-loving person," Jirasek said.

"She liked to go [in the] wintertime snowboarding, you know, with the little kids.Like, she was just so involved with her nieces."

Jirasek said her niece had just moved into the Hill Street house with her boyfriend a few weeks ago.

Police officer cut in altercation

According to police, Jirasek and Hunterbecame involved in a dispute inside their suite andJirasekwas stabbedin the upper body.

He then ran from the suite and officerswere called, police said.

Police found Hunterin the area of Caton Street and Hill Street and while attempting to arrest him, an officer was cut.

"He approached or confronted the officer while armed with a knife either lunging or attacking the officer, and certainly making efforts to disarm the officer of his service pistol," Const. Jason Michalyshen told reporters on Monday.

Hunter was finally held downand placed under arrest, police said.

The officer who was cut was treated fornon-life-threatening injuries.

Ludmila Jirasek said shenever met Hunter, and she didn't know of any issues in her niece's relationship, but she doesn't want what happened to Janelle to happen to anyone else.

"I don't think anybody deserves this," she said. "No matter what, there is always the door. Walk."
