Winnipeg Jet Dustin Byfuglien will be charged in connection with an alleged drunk boating incident in Minnesota.

CBC News has learned that a Minnesota district attorney is recommending that formal charges be laid against the 26-year-old defenceman.

Byfuglien was arrested on the evening Aug. 31 on Lake Minnetonka in Excelsior, Minn., near the state capital.

It is alleged that Byfuglien was boating while intoxicated. The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office has said he refused to undergo a blood or urine test.

Byfuglien could face a third-degree charge, but the state district attorney's office would not release details until he has been formally charged.

Those charges could be laid in three to six weeks.

Byfuglien, a Minnesota native, was on the Chicago Blackhawks team that won the Stanley Cup in 2010 and was then traded to the Atlanta Thrashers.

The Thrashers team was relocated to Winnipeg this year.
