The Crown alleged Rent was pushed from behind and he hit his head on the Corydon Avenue sidewalk. Forensic evidence suggested Rent died of blunt force trauma to the head. He had double the legal alcohol limit in his body, as well as tranquilizers.

Earlier in the trial, another former bouncer testified that the victim was upset following a family dispute.

Darren Colomy told court that Rent was fuming when he went into the bar that evening.

Surveillance video footage showed a group of people including Rent, Colomy and Somers arguing outside Bar Italia.
