Kevin Maryk pleads guilty to abducting his 2 children

Kevin Marykhas pleaded guilty to abductinghis children, who had disappeared in 2008 and were discovered in Mexico almostfour years later.

Abby and Dominic Marykwere five and seven years old, respectively, when they went missing in August 2008.They were found in a townhouse complex in Guadalajara, Mexico, in May 2012.

At the time of their disappearance, the children were on atwo-week vacation as part of a court-approved visit with Maryk.Their mother, Emily Cablek, has legal custody.

Last week, one ofMaryk'saccomplices, RobertGroen, was sentenced to a year in jail after pleading guilty to abduction-related charges.

Maryk pleaded guilty to two counts of abduction, one for each of the children, on Thursday.

Crown prosecutorDebbie Buorsaccepted the guilty plea and dropped three abduction-related charges against him.

A sentencing hearing will take place on Monday.Buors said the Crown will ask for a five-year sentence.

Maryk's lawyer,ToddBourcier,saidhe will likelyseeka jail sentence of less than two years for his client,includingtime alreadyserved in custody.

Cablek told CBC News she is disappointed to learn the three related charges against Maryk have been dropped, but she's still happy he pleaded guilty to the abduction charges.

Marykand Groen were arrested shortlyafter police found Dominic and Abbyin the Mexican townhouse.

The children were reunited with their mom in Winnipeg and the men were eventually broughtback to the city as well.

A third man, Cody McKay, who is Maryk's nephew, isstill at large and police say an outstanding Canada-wide warrant remains for his arrest.
