Kevin Maryk, who abducted his Winnipeg kids, faces new charges

A Winnipeg man who abducted his children and was found four years later hiding them in Mexico is going go to trial on a handful of new charges.

Kevin Maryk appeared in a Winnipeg court Tuesday to face six new charges, including assault, uttering threats and living off the avails of prostitution.

A trialdate has been set for Dec.9.

The new charges date back to a time before he took his children, Abby and Dominic,to Mexico.

The children went missing in August 2008 and weren't found until May 2012 in a townhouse complex in Guadalajara, Mexico.

At the time of their disappearance, Abby and Dominic five and seven years old, respectively were on atwo-week vacation as part of a court-approved visit withMaryk. Their mother, EmilyCablek, has legal custody.

In June of this year,Maryk pleaded guilty to two counts of abduction, one for each of the children. In return for the plea, theCrowndropped three other abduction-related charges against him.

In September, he was sentenced to four years in prison but with credit for time served, the time behind bars was reduced to374 days.

A week beforeMaryk'splea, one of his accomplices, RobertGroen, was sentenced to a year in jail after pleading guilty to abduction-related charges.

A third man, Cody McKay, who isMaryk'snephew, isstill at large and a Canada-wide warrant remains for his arrest.
