Body found in garbage bin in Lansdowne Avenue back lane, Winnipeg police say

A Lansdowne Avenue back lane near Main Street is blocked by police tape after a woman said shefound a body in a garbage bin near her home.

Police spokesperson Const. Rob Carversaid Thursday dispatchers receivedacall at 7:40 p.m. Wednesday evening froma homeowner who found what appeared to be a body in a trash bin in the back lane.

Officers found the body of a manwhen they arrived, and police are now investigating the incident as a homicide.

Jeremy Penner said it was his wife who discovered thebody Wednesday evening.

She was taking out the recycling and noticed a black garbage bin was in the way. When she tried to move it,it was very heavy, he said.

"Something told her to look inside,"he said, and she called 911 after spotting the body.

"We just really feel sorry for the family," said Penner."That's just a terrible, terrible fate."

It does not appear the body had been there for long, because it was not in a state ofdecomposition, Carver said.

Officers were still investigating in the back lane as of8:30 a.m. Thursday.

Police are asking residents in the area to take note of any suspicious activity over the last few days. They're also asking them to check their security cameras for anything unusual.
