Life is a Cabaret with Royal MTCs 2014-2015 season

Sherlock and Robin Hood are coming to the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre next season.

RMTC officially announced its 2014-2015 season on Friday. For the first time in recent years, theres no premiere in thelineup for next season. But thanks in part to collaborations with Torontos Mirvish Productions, the theatre is bringing a couple of recent Broadway hits to Winnipeg, along with a pair of recently-premiered Canadian plays, and a good old Cabaret.

Heres what theatre fans have to look forward to next season:

At the John Hirsch Mainstage...

Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Jersey Lily (Oct. 2 - 25): Holmes is hot right now - so programming this mystery/comedy by Seattle playwright Katie Forgette is elementary.

The Heart of Robin Hood (Nov. 13 - Dec. 6): A co-production with Torontos Mirvish Productions, this take on the Robin Hood story was a 2011 hit for the Royal Shakespeare Company. It reimagines Robin and his band as a group who steal from the rich - and keep what they take, until Marion tries to convince him otherwise. Set to music by the American roots band Poor Old Shine.

Cabaret (Jan. 8 - 31, 2015): Kander and Ebbs ever-popular musical, set in pre-war Berlin, kicks off the new year at Royal MTC. Because maybe life really is a cabaret, old chums.

Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike (Feb. 12 - Mar. 7): Another co-production with Mirvish, Christopher Durangs comedy of sibling rivalry was a Broadway hit in 2013, and won the Tony for Best New Play that year.

The Woman in Black (Mar. 19 - Apr. 11): Do you wanna see something scary? This Gothic horror story, based on Susan Hills 1983 novel, has become a hit in London. It opened on the West End in 1989 - and is still running.

Clever Little Lies (Apr. 23 - May 16): A comedy about family secrets from Tony-winning American playwright Joe DiPietro.

Armstrongs War (Oct. 30 - Nov. 15): A 2013 play by Governor Generals Award winner Colleen Murphy, which tells the story of a Girl Guide who connects with a soldier wounded in Afghanistan.

The Devils Music: The Life and Blue of Bessie Smith (Dec. 4 - 20): A mix of story and song centred around one night in the life of The Empress of the Blues, Bessie Smith.

Private Lives (Jan. 29 - Feb. 14, 2015): Royal MTCs entry in next years Master Playwright Festival, celebrating the work of Nol Coward. This 1930 comedy of manners about a divorced couple who find themselves in adjoining hotel rooms - with their new spouses - is one of his best-known plays.

Late Company (Mar. 5 - 21): This play by Canadian writer Jordan Tannahill was a hit at the 2013 SummerWorks festival in Toronto. It centres around two families struck by tragedy, and their attempts to find reconciliation and forgiveness.
