Driver of stolen vehicle suffered collapsed lung, broken ribs in rollover during police chase

Manitoba's police watchdog is investigating after a vehicle pursued by officers rolled overnear Main Street and the Perimeter Highway, sendingone person to hospital Thursday.

Manitoba's police watchdog is investigating after a vehicle pursued by officers rolled overnear Main Street and the Perimeter Highway, sendingone person to hospital Thursday.

Just before midnight, Winnipeg police responded to a report of a robbery in which the suspects fled in a stolen vehicle, according to a news release from theIndependentInvestigationUnitof Manitoba.

Around 1:30 a.m., police spotted the stolen SUV nearAnderson Avenue and Powers Street.

With police in pursuit, the driver of the stolen SUV lost control while trying to turn onto the exit ramp from the eastbound lanes of the Perimeter Highway onto southbound Main Street.

The vehicle rolled over and the driver tried to run away, but police caught him after a short foot chase, the IIU release said. He was taken to hospital in critical condition with a collapsed lung and broken ribs caused by the crash.

As of Thursday afternoon, he was still in hospital in stable condition.

The Independent Investigation Unit has opened an investigation, which it is mandated to do in all cases when someone is killed or seriously injured as a result of police actions.
