Manitoba votes 2019: Steinbach riding profile

The southeastern Manitoba riding of Steinbachhas been around since 1990, but its boundaries changed in the 2018 riding redistribution. It lost a large portion of its territory to the south.

The riding includes its namesake, the city of Steinbach, as well as the communities of Mitchell and Blumenort.

Its population is 22,965, according to the province's 2018 riding profile(compiled fromthe 2016 census).

Themedian age of the riding is younger than the overall provincial median, at 32.5in Steinbachcompared to38.3provincewide,according to the 2018 riding profileand the 2016 census. The census found themedian household income in the area is $66,758.

More facts about Steinbach:

  • Just over nine per cent of residents reported they speak German most often at homeon the 2016 census,according to the province's 2018 profile, and two per cent reported they speak Tagalog most often at home.
  • Roughly 22per cent of residents identified as immigrants, the profile says.
  • The median value of a home in the riding is$269,314, the profile says, and roughly 70 per centof residents reported they own their home.

The riding has only ever voted Progressive Conservative.

  • 1990 onwards (seven general elections): Progressive Conservative.

The nominated candidates for the 2019 election are:

  • Kelvin Goertzen (Progressive Conservative).
  • Rob Jessup(NDP).
  • LAmberKensley (Liberal).

Candidates become official when they meet criteria set out in the province'sElections Act, including providing a statement of disclosure. In Steinbach, allcandidates are official.
