Charges coming after pickup truck rear-ends school bus on highway

Police plan to charge a 19-year-old man from Grunthal, Man., after he rear-ended a school bus on a Manitoba highway.

A 19-year-old man from Grunthal, Man., will likely be charged with careless driving or imprudent driving under the Highway Traffic Act, said a spokesperson for the RCMP. (CBC)

Police plan to charge a 19-year-old man from Grunthal, Man.,after he rear-endeda school bus on a Manitoba highway.

The crash happened around 8:30 a.m. on Friday when a school bus pulled over to pick up childrenon the shoulder of Highway 52 at the intersection of Honey Lane Road, about three kilometres northwest of Kleefeld, Man., police wrote in a release.

The bus had its flashing lights on and stop sign extended, police said,and one vehicle came to a stop on the highway and waited for it to move on before proceeding.

A pickup truck came up behind that vehicle and was trying to pass itonthe shoulder of the highway when itrear-ended the bus. There were about 20 children on the school bus at the time and no injuries were reported.

Children in the bus were evaluated by EMS there on the highway and again at the Kleefeld School.

The 19-year-old driver of the pickup truck was treated and released at the scene for minor injuries. A spokesperson for the RCMP said they expect to charge himwith carelessdriving or imprudent driving under the Highway Traffic Act.

RCMP are still investigating the incident.
