Manitoba pledges $100K for Typhoon Haiyan victims

Manitoba's premier is pledging $100, 000 to the Manitoba Council for International Co-operation, to aid Typhoon Haiyan victims in the Philippines.

The storm, which is being called one of the worst ever recorded, battered the country killing as many as 10,000 people in one city alone.

Many Filipino Canadians living in Winnipeg have family in the affected areas.

The community is fundraising, hoping to collect canned goods and money for medical supplies.

"And still we are appealing to the community, they need our help, any amount of donations we need very badly," said Lito Taruc, the president of the Philippine Canadian Centre of Manitoba.

Taruc told CBC News he has 11 relatives in the Philippines he has been unable to account for.

People in Winnipeg who wish to help out with relief efforts have several options.

The Philippine Canadian Centre of Manitoba at 737 Keewatin is accepting dry goods and cash.

The Filipino Seniors Group of Winnipeg on Euclid is also open this weekend for donations.

People can also make give money through the Canadian Red Cross.
