Winnipeg Transit riders were threatened by a man with a knife early Friday morning but the actions of the bus driver helped keep people from getting hurt, police say.

"The driver did a great job here. Looks like his actions probably made sure everybody was safe and allowed us to apprehend the individual," Const. Rob Carver said.

The driver of the bus called a transit supervisor about a man threatening people on his bus and police responded at about 12:45 a.m.

The driver stopped the bus on Dunkirk Drive near Kingston Row, claiming it had a mechanical problem, police said, and the man got off the bus without having hurt anyone.

Police chased him down and seized an eight-inch knife, Carver said.

The suspect, 34, told police he used meth before the incident.

"We're seeing this now on a fairly regular basis, someone who's using methamphetamine," Carver said.

The suspect was detained in custody and charged with carrying a concealed weapon and possessing a weapon.
