Winnipeg police have upgraded charges against a man accused in a fatal shooting on Canada Day.

On July 1, police found the body of 28-year-old Michelle Stobbe near Donald Street and Broadway.

Stobbe had been shot in the upper body, according to police.

Police said they believed 35-year-old John Elwood Cameron was handling a 9 mm handgun that was registered to him when Stobbe grabbed at his arm and the gun went off.

Cameron was then charged with numerous weapons offences.

After further investigation, the homicide unit has now charged Cameron with second-degree murder.

Winnipeg police said they no longer believe Stobbe had a part in the gun going off.

"Whether or not they were currently involved in a romantic relationship -- but my understanding, in speaking to the sergeant in charge of the investigation [is]they were previously involved," said Const. Jason Michalyshen.

Cameron remains at the Provincial Remand Centre.
