'No one won anything here': father of murder victim

A Winnipeg man says his family is relieved but still heartsick as the last suspect in his son's murder pleaded guilty Wednesday to the crime.

Chad Handsor pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the death of Trevor Wiebe.

Wiebe's body was found in an open field near Ste. Agathe, south of Winnipeg, in February 2003. An autopsy determined the 20-year-old died of exposure, but said other injuries including a stabbing, strangulation and injection with a substance that may have been drain cleaner may have contributed to the death.

"Today is a real rough day," said Floyd Wiebe, the victim's father, who has become an advocate for victims' rights since his son's death.

"It's so hard to describe to somebody. Do we jump for joy? 'Yes! We won!' We didn't win anything here. No one won anything here. [Handsor] has thrown his life away. My son's life is completely destroyed, and we've been destroyed through this."

Since his son's death, Floyd Wiebe has become an advocate for victims' rights.

Handsor is one of four people charged in Wiebe's death. Two other suspects have already been found guilty. A fourth person was tried in youth court and is awaiting a verdict on his role in the case.

Handsor will be sentenced in the next few weeks. He faces a mandatory life sentence with no possibility of parole for 10 years.
