Man dies after stabbing at southeast Winnipeg Tim Hortons

A man is dead after being stabbed at a Tim Hortons in southeast Winnipeg.

Police were called to the restaurant's parking lot at Fermor Avenue and Lagimodiere Boulevard around 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

A 43-year-old man was found with critical injuries and later died.He has been identified by police asRyan Kelly Legary.

His death is the city's 23rd homicide of the year

No arrests have yet been made but it appears police have made some progress toward identifying a suspect.

SpokespersonConst. Rob Carver. noted "early indications" are that Legary and his attacker did not know one another.

Numerouswitnessesfrom both the Tim Hortons and neighbouring Petro Canada gas station have been interviewed, Carver added, but could not say what led to the altercation.

"There's certainly no information that I amat liberty to release at this point in the investigation," he said.

The Tim Hortons parking lot and restaurant remained blocked with tape and cruisersFriday afternoon as investigators pored over the scene for evidence.

"Forensic analysis takes a long time and once we release [clear] a scene, we can't go back. To maintain the integrity of those investigations we need to make sure every detail has been done," Carver said.

Bob Paul, who lives in a seniors' complex across from the restaurant and often walks there for a coffee, said he's not distressed about it being the scene of a serious crime.

"It's happening all over the city, doesn't really matter where you are," he said with a shrug. "It's going to happen anywhere."

Chris Jagassar, who also lives in the building, was more uneasy about it.

"It's a bit concerning, it's getting close to home," he said."But as Bob said, it's happening all over the city. It's sad."

'Horrible numbers'

Legary's death puts the city's homicide rateclosely on pace with last year's record-setting number. At this time in 2019, Winnipeg had 25.

"The level of brazen crime we've experienced is alarming," police Chief Danny Smythsaid during a news conference Friday, in which he also released the crime statistics from the previous year.

"Violent crime and property crime are well above our five-year averages, and our five-year averages were already way above the Canadian average," he said about the 2019 crime data.

Onestatistic that stood out was the number of homicides 44 which doubled the total from 2018.

"This year has been just as bad as last year in a lot of ways. We're on pace for some horrible numbers again this year," Smyth said.

Police are asking anyone who was in the area of Lagimodiere and Fermor during the time the incident happenedto contact either the homicide unit at 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).

Even the slightest bit of information could help, Carver said.

"Anything in terms of vehicles that might have been in the area that seemed suspiciousor unusual, individuals that they saw, anything that comes to mind could be useful in this case," he said.
