Four people dead in Langside Street shooting

Fourpeople are now dead after a shooting at a Langside Street home early Sunday morning, CBC News has confirmed with family.

A woman told CBC that her cousins, who were sisters, had both been shot. One was pronounced dead at the scene, the other was taken to hospital in critical condition.

The family told CBC News late Sunday night she has also now passed away.

They described the sisters as loving mothers with big, caring hearts whowere always there for familyand strangers.

Police were called to the 100 block of Langside just after 4 a.m. for a report of multiple injuries, public information officer Const. Jason Michalyshentold reporters at a news conferenceoutside police headquarters Sunday afternoon.

A man and a woman were pronounced dead at the scene, and three additional victims two men and a woman were rushed to hospital in critical condition,Michalyshen saidat the news conference.

One of those menlater died of his injuries. The victims are still being identified.

"We're dealing with something very, very serious,"Michalyshen said.

An early morning shooting in downtown Winnipeg left three people dead and two critically injured. NOTE: Since this video was published a fourth person has died.

At least five police cars were at the sceneat about 9 a.m. Officers blocked off Langside from Sara Avenue to Westminster Avenue.

A forensics vehicle was also on the scene at about 10 a.m.

Kelly Nickel, who lives in an apartment nearby, said police knocked on the building's door at about 4:20 a.m.

"When we came out, we saw that the street was blocked off and there's police cars everywhere," Nickel said. "It's pretty scary that something like this would happen just a few doors down from where we live."

A homicide detective came by at about 8:30 a.m.asking for footage from the building's doorbell camera, Nickel said.

"Hopefully this doesn't happen again around here," Nickelsaid.

Other nearby residents also heard the commotion Sunday morning.

Megan Goldenthalsaid she stepped out to walk her dog when she saw the police tape.

"It's scary,because I have children," she said. "I don't take them out at night or really early in the morning anyways just because I know stuff like that will happen."

Abdullah Alsayem said he was lying awake around 4 a.m. Sundaywhen he heard a car revving its engines outside his apartment building.

"Then I heard like someone was crying so loud," he said."So I tried to look outside through my window, I didn't see anyone on the street becausemy apartment is at the corner."

Alsayem, who just moved to the neighbourhood last month, said he's considering moving again because he also feels unsafe.

"Crime in the city is going up," he said. "It is crazy everywhere."

Area resident Martin Pike said the neighbourhood needs to be "cleaned up" and that there's "too much crime, too much drugs."

"There's been a lot of traffic in and out of that place, so you never know," he said. "Plus it's a high drug traffic area."

Angela Klassenof the West Broadway Bear Clansaid news of this tragedy has been very hard for the neighbourhood.The group will meet this week to discuss the possibility of stepping up patrols in the areaas a way of calming fears, addingif police are able to make arrests, local residents will feel safer.

Politicians comment on shooting

Manitoba Premier Wab Kinewcalled the shooting a "terrible act of violence" on the social media platformX, formerly known as Twitterand said his thoughts are with the victims and the community. He also said he wanted to thank first responders for their work.

Kinew said he's asked Justice Minister Matt Wiebe to "work with the City of Winnipeg to strengthen our shared approach topublic safety."

Winnipeg Mayor Scott Gillinghamalso put out a statement on X, calling the shooting "shocking and disturbing" while also thankingfirst responders for their work.

"Their professionalism and courage while dealing with a truly traumatic situation is commendable," he wrote.

"I acknowledge the lasting impact attending such scenes can have on their lives."

No arrests have been made, police said, and the homicide unit continues to investigate.
