A Winnipeg school couldhost the city's first Spanish as a second language program for elementary and junior high students next fall.

The Winnipeg School Division has selected Luxton School as the site of its proposed Spanish Bilingual program, in which students will learn both Spanish and English. It could to start in September 2015.

Parents who are interested in enrolling their children in the program learned more about it at an open house Thursday night.

Kathy Heppner, who helped spearhead the program, says having a bilingual school like this makes sense in a multicultural city like Winnipeg.

"Parents want to see all of their aged children being able to be in a Spanish bilingual program," Heppner said.

"They want to see their kids not only start in kindergarten, but they want the kids have an opportunity to do a Grade 4 start or Grade 7 start."

The idea behind a Spanish bilingual school in Winnipeg was first proposed in 2012.
