Flooding has forced 255 people out of Peguis First Nation in Manitoba, and another 515 have been identified as at risk.

The reserve, home to about 7,200 people, is located 190 kilometres north of Winnipeg on the Fisher River.

Officials declared a state of emergency on Tuesday.

Declaring a state of emergency enables the reserve to access federal disaster assistance funds and force the evacuation of affected homes.

Evacuees are being registered at the emergency centre on the reservethen transported to Winnipeg, where they are put up in hotels or with relatives.

Many regions across the Prairie provinces are at a high risk of flooding this spring. CBC
