Lifted logs baffle Festival du Voyageur

The Festival Du Voyageur can't figure out how someone managed to steal more than 320 logs from its site.

Executive director Ginette Lavack Walters said officials made the discovery Monday.

The logs are being used as part ofrenovations at Fort Gibraltar.

Lavack Walters said each is almost 6 meters long, and it would have required heavy equipment to move them.

"(It) could have happened over a couple of days," she said. "I don't know who's brazen and brave enough to come back to a site repeatedly like that, but we really, at this point, don't know. And those materials could be way long gone out of province or ...just somewhere tucked away."

Lavack Walters estimates the logs are worth $10,000 and could put the renovation behind schedule.

She said the logs were inside a locked gate.

She said the Festival was prepared for vandalism, but nothing like this.

"We're at a bit of a loss on how this could have happened," she said. "It's like a tree that's been cut in half, but they are 19 feet long. It needs heavy machinery, semi trucks, something to move these logs."
