U of M reveals plan to convert golf course into housing

The University of Manitoba is poised to develop a giant swath of land next to the newly-finished Bombers stadium.

The university now owns what was once Southwood Golf and Country Club and wants to redevelop the area into mixed-usehousing and retail space.

In 2012, the university put out a call to architects and land developers for plans to redevelop the 120-acre space. Officials received 45 bids for the Southwood precinct and have now decided on a group of firms.

Two Toronto-based firms and two Winnipeg-based firms have been selected for the project. Janet Rosenberg and Studio, Cibinel Architects, Landmark Planning and Design and ARUP Canada will begin working on a master plan for the land parcel in 2014.

University officials say they want the land to be used for housing and commercial space as well as be pedestrian friendly.
