$37M in funds to flow toward water, waste upgrades in Manitoba municipalities

A handful of Manitoba municipalities are expected to receive upgrades to water and waste treatment facilities through joint funding from the federal, provincial and local levels of government announced Tuesday.

A handful of Manitoba municipalities will receive upgrades to water and waste treatment facilities through joint funding from the federal, provincial and local levels of government announced Tuesday.

More than $37 million will flow from all levels of governmenttoward 24 projects meant to "strengthen and secure important water and waste water systems in the province for decades to come,"Canada's National Resource Minister and Winnipeg South Centre MP Jim Carr said.

The federal government is kicking in up to$18.6 million while the province will putup $9.3 million as part of the Clear Water and Wastewater Fund. Municipalities will cover the remaining $9 million.

Communities such as Elie, Fisher Branch, St. Jean Baptiste and Stonewall will receive new sewage lagoons or upgrades to existing infrastructure, Carr said.

Water distribution systems will beimprovedinLandmark and Dauphin, while a new water treatment plant and pipelines will be built to service therural municipality of Russell-Binscarth, Carr added.
