Isolated Winnipeg seniors can call 311 for help with groceries, other essentials during pandemic

Elderly Winnipeggers without family or friends to help out during the COVID-19 crisiscan now call the city's 311 line for assistance.

The United Way Winnipeg and A & O: Support Services for Older Adults Inc. have teamed up with the city to directthose calls for seniors having trouble getting it themselves.

This includesassistance with delivery of groceries, prescription drugsor other social services.

The federal government has provided $170,000 to help with the initiative. Extra funding will also come from theWinnipeg Foundation.

Agencies are hearingmany callsfor help from seniors, says the United Way's Connie Walker.

"I'm reminded of a military veteran who is isolated, doesn't have family. Has no idea how he was going to make it through the coming weeks and months. His last words to one of our staff people was, 'Pray for me,'" Walker said.

Walker says her staff was able to get help for the man, but there are many other elderly Winnipeggers in similar circumstances.

The two agencies will also partner with local delivery company Skip the Dishes and CAA Manitoba to assist in dropping off much-needed supplies to seniors who need it.
