Magician charged with child porn worked for province

A Winnipeg magician charged with making and distributing child pornography not only performed magic shows at daycares and schools across the city, but also worked for the province.

A Winnipeg magician charged with making and distributingchild pornography not only performed magic shows at daycares and schools across the city, butalso worked for the province.

A provincial spokesperson confirmed to CBC Newsthat DanielKamenickywas workingas a "part-time, casual service provider" for Manitoba's Department of Families at the time of his arrest last Wednesday.

The province did not provide details on what kind of serviceKamenickyprovided or what demographic he worked with. The spokesperson confirmed that the appropriate background checks onKamenickywere done.

Kamenicky was "suspended immediately when we were informed of the matter, pending the outcome of the police investigation," the spokesperson said.

Kamenicky, 39, was arrested on Aug.24 andcharged with making child pornography, possessing child pornography, distributing child pornography and voyeurism. Kamenicky, whoremains in police custody, performs underthe name Dan the Magic Man.

Kamenicky was also employed as an educational assistant atWindsor School, a kindergarten to Grade 8 school in Elm Park. The principalconfirmed he has been suspended from theLouis Riel School Division.

The local performer also worked for theUniversity of Manitoba's Mini U program. University officials in a letter said a criminal background check of Kamenickythey commissioned came back clean.
