Winnipeg's red panda cub gets a name

The votes are tallied and the Assiniboine Park Zoo'sred panda cub has been officially named, Kiah.

Thezoo last week put out a request to the public to voteon one of four possible names for the cub,bornJune 30.

Kiah, meaning from the beautiful place, received the highest number of votes with 354.

In all, 1,000 votes were cast on the Assiniboine Park and Zoo Facebook page and in person at the zoo on Sept. 15.

"Its great to see such a large response from the public and I think Kiah will be very happy with her new name," said Tim Sinclair-Smith, director of zoological operations.

The zoo is home to three red pandas, Kiah and her parents Rufus and Rouge.

Visitors can see them in their habitat at Toucan Ridge during regular zoo hours, daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
