Crews fight late night fire at convenience store in Winnipeg's North End

The city is looking into the cause of afire at a convenience store in north Winnipeg late Thursday night.

The Quickie Mart at the intersection of Selkirk Avenue and McGregor Street, in the William Whyte neighbourhood, caught fire shortly before midnight,the city said in a news release Friday.

When crews arrived, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the two-storey building.

Fire crews had the flames under control around 1 a.m. People left the building themselves before firefighters arrived, and no one was injured, the city said.

A damage estimate isn't yet available.

The city is asking people to be careful not to slip on ice outside of the building, as the water used to put on the fire had frozen Friday morning.

Warehouse fire

Crews fought another fire a few hours later, at a warehouse in a single-storey commercial building in the 400 block of Keewatin Street, in the Weston area.

Shortly after 6 a.m., crews responded toreports of a fire that started inside a nearby truck trailer and spread to the building. They found the trailer fully engulfed when they arrived and saw heavy smoke and flames coming from the building, the city said in its news release.

Firefighters used a semi-truck to move other nearbytrailers away from the flames. They had the fire under control shortly after 10:30 a.m.

The fire was contained to the warehouse section of the building. No one was found inside, and no injuries were reported.

Thecause of that fire is alsobeing investigated.
