Woman in her 60s killed in St. Boniface hit-and-run

One person died Thursday morning after being hit by a vehicle that Winnipeg police say was involved in an earlier crime.

One person died Thursday morning after being hit by a vehicle that Winnipeg police say was involved in an earlier crime. Winnipeg police told CBC News the victim was a woman in her 60s.

"It's tragic," Const. Rob Carver told reporters at an afternoon news conference.

Police were called to the intersection ofMarion Street and Traverse Avenue at around 11:40 a.m. after a female pedestrian was struck.The vehicle then left the scene.

Carver said police believe the vehicle was involved in a crime prior tothe collision but couldn't yet say when that crime took place or where it happened.

The person who was hit was an innocent bystander and has no links to theearliercrime, Carver said Friday.

"At this point she looks like just an innocent victim," he said.

Carver couldn't provide a description for the suspect vehicle, saying the detailspolice have right now are preliminary and they don'twant to put out false information.

Marion Street was closed between Traverse and Braemaravenues while police investigated.

  • Winnipeg police initially said the pedestrian was taken to hospital but quickly revised that information to say the pedestrian had died at the scene.
