Car2Go to shut down in Montreal and across North America

In a letter to Montreal users, Car2Go said it isnot "in a position to commit to the level of investment necessary to make the North American market successful."

The car-sharingserviceCar2Gowill shut down its operations early next year throughout North America, including in Montreal.

The closure is effective Feb.29, 2020.

Car2Go recently merged with the car-sharingserviceDriveNow under the name Share Now. The German-based company has operations in North America inNew York City, N.Y., Seattle, Wash, Washington, D.C., and Vancouver, along withMontreal.

In a letter to Montreal users, Car2Go said it isnot "in a position to commit to the level of investment necessary to make the North American market successful."

"We want to say thank you to our customers and the City of Montreal, who have supported us since we launched in the market in 2013," the notice said.

"We are saddened by this decision and deeply apologize for the inconvenience this will cause you when service ends."

Montreal is still serviced by the Quebec-based car-sharing company Communauto.

In addition to closing its North American operations, Car2Gois also halting service inBrussels, London and Florence due to"low adoption rates."

The company said it is focused ongrowing its market in 18 other European cities.
