Identity of 2nd Canadian killed in Mumbai attacks confirmed

The second Canadian killed during the deadly Mumbai attacks was identified as the partner of a Montreal doctor who also died, the Canadian Press reported.

Elizabeth Russell died along with her partner, Dr. Michael Moss, bothof Montreal, CP reported, citing Russell's daughter Anne Russell.

Russell was a retired nurse and social worker whowas Moss's partner for 20 years, her daughter said. The couple was vacationing andexpected to return to Canada on Monday, she said. CP didn't provide more details.

On Friday, Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon issued a statement about the death of a second Canadian but no identity wasdisclosed.

"I offer my deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the deceased," Cannon said Friday in a statement. "The next of kin have been notified, and our consular officers have put themselves at their service."

Cannon did not provide any details of the circumstances surrounding either death, including when and where they occurred.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this difficult time," he said.

On Sunday, India blamed "elements" from Pakistan for the 60-hour siege that began Wednesday evening during which suspected Islamist militants hit 10 sites across India's financial capital, leaving at least 174 dead.

Two Canadians, Montreal actor Michael RudderandToronto yoga instructor Helen Connolly, were among the hundreds of people who were injured in theattacks. Seventeen other Canadians who were inside two luxury hotels where some of the attacks happened, were unharmed.

The attacks, which ended Saturday, occurredat 10 locations across India's financial capital,including the twohotels, a crowded train station, a hospital and a popular cafe.

Moss was a British-trained general practitioner who immigrated to Manitoba from England more than 30 years ago, according to Dr. Ron Ludman, one of his colleagues in Montreal. He was in Mumbai on vacation. Ludman said he was told by Moss's daughter that he died in Mumbai on Wednesday.
