Life in prison for Montreal gas bar robbery-murder

One of the two men charged in the murder of a teenage gas station attendant in January 2006 has pleaded guilty to lesser charge of second-degree murder.

Tommy Gagn, 21, was sentenced on Wednesday to life in prison without the possibility of parole for 10 years.

Gagn also pleaded guilty to charges of unlawful confinement and armed robbery in the slaying of Brigitte Serre, 17.

Quebec Superior Court Justice Jerry Zigman agreed with the joint recommendation of the Crown and defence and sentenced Gagn to life in prison.

Zigman also placed a publication ban on the name of the other accused, whose trial has yet to begin.

Joel Nantais, a third man who acted as an accomplice by waiting outside the gas station, pleaded guilty to armed robbery and conspiracy to commit armed robbery last April.

Nantais was handed an 18-month sentence to be served in the community.

Serre was working alone as a night attendant at a gas station in Montreal's north end when she was stabbed to death.
