La Presse to cease printing entirely, cut 49 jobs

La Presse, one of the oldest and largest newspapers in Canada, has announced it will go completely digital by 2018.

After 133 years, the French-language daily will run its final print edition on Dec. 30, 2017 as the last step in its push to become an entirely online news source.

La Presse has only published a Saturday newspaper since 2016 after it optedto cut its weekday print edition.

The newspaper also announced Wednesday it would abolish 49 part-time and full-time jobs. It is not yet clear which positions will be cut.

La Presse will continue to publish articles on a daily basis, but content will be on its tablet edition, La Presse+. The move waspart of the newspaper's long-term plan,which was to go entirely paperlessin favour of its application.

Pierre-Elliott Levasseur, the president of La Presse, said in a statementthat 90 per cent of revenues come from its digital content and that the online version of the newspaper is read by 273,000 tablet users daily.
