Montreal wants to name more streets, parks after women

The City of Montreal wants the names of its streets, parks and municipal buildings to reflect the contributions made by women to the city's history.

The city has created a name bank,calledToponym'Elles, tohelp come up withthenames of375 prominent women in time forMontreal's 375thanniversary in 2017.

The initiative is meant toaddressthelack of diversity when it comes to the names ofpublic spaces, according to the city.

Women make up only six per cent of 6,000 place names in Montreal, whilemenrepresent more than50 per cent.

Montrealersare invited tosubmit suggestions ofprominent women to the city.
