Quebec man in alleged Austrian-German bomb plot denied bail

A Trois-Rivires resident arrestedon allegations he partook in an international bomb plot has been denied bail.

Quebec Court Judge Sylvie Durand ruled in Montrealon Friday that Said Namouh, a 35-year-old Moroccan, poses a flight risk.

Namouh's lawyer, Ren Duval, argued the Crown hadn't shown thathis client was linked to the alleged plot.

He also said Namouh has no money and no job, and was prepared to stay in a homeless shelter if released, an option Durand said wasnt secure.

"My client has no means whatsoever and does not even have a fixed address," Duval told CBC News.

Crown prosecutor Dominique Dudemaine said Namouh, who has been held in detention since September,poses a danger to society because of comments he left on jihadist websites that show he's ready to become a martyr.

"He faces imprisonment for life, so that was taken into account by the court," Dudemaine said. "That is a serious charge, and he could face a lengthy sentence."

Namouh was arrested last fall at his home in Trois-Rivires after RCMP received a tip from Austrian police.

Authorities say they have evidence that Namouh collaborated with a man in Austria to make a threatening video posted on the internet.

The video featured a masked man threatening to bomb targets in Austria and Germany if those countries did not withdraw their troops from Afghanistan.

The RCMP also says thatit seized e-mails, pictures and files from Namouh's computer that promoted violent jihad.

There is no evidence that Namouh was planning to commit an offence on Canadian soil.

Namouhs lawyer said he will apply to challenge the bail decision in Quebec Superior Court.
