Quebec MNAs prepare corruption probe demand

A coalition of MNAs is expected to table a demand for a public inquiry into alleged Liberal Party influence-peddling and allegations of corruption in the construction industry when the national assembly resumes on Tuesday.

A coalition of MNAs is expected to table a demand fora public inquiry into alleged Liberal Party influence-peddling and allegations of corruption in the construction industry when the national assembly resumes on Tuesday.

Last week, about 60 opposition members, headed by Parti Qubcois Leader Pauline Marois, donned identical white scarves duringan outdoor news conference in Quebec City.

"When we wear these white scarves, we think it [signifies] truth and light and transparency," Marois said in announcing their call fora full public inquiry to probe allegations of Liberal influence-peddling and party kickbacks from the construction industry.

Quebec Solidaire MNA Amir Khadir says Premier Jean Charest has no choice but to open an inquiry.

"I'm convinced that one day or another, Mr. Charest will have to do that or resign," he said.

Charest dismisses the opposition's allegations as unproven hearsay.

However, some MNAs have refused to go along withMarois's group.

The ADQ also wants an inquiry, but Action Democratique Leader Grard Deltellhas refusedto be part of the coalition.

"For sure, we agree with that kind of proposition and that kind of motion," he said."But the point is that we don't want to play in Pauline Marois's movie."

Marois formed the coalition with the hope of toppling the government at a time when the PQ stands a good chance of winning a snap election, Deltell said.

"As far as I'm concerned, what we have seen here is that the true colours of the Parti Qubcois is to get into power as soon as possible, whatever it takes," he said. "So, even if this party cannot make the changes people need, they are ready to bring down this government."
