Students older than 25 eligible for cheaper OPUS card this fall

Student groups have been calling to lift age limits on student rates for years. The cheaper pass is currently only available to students aged 25 and under.

Policy goes into effect Sept. 1, reduced rate also applies to Laval, Longueuil

Starting this fall, full-time students of any agein the Montreal area will be eligible for a reduced rate on their monthly public transit pass.

Student groups have been calling on the province tolift age limits on student rates for years. The cheaper pass is currently only available to students aged 25 and under.

The new policy goes into effect Sept. 1.

The new rates are as follows:

  • In Montreal (STM): $49.75 instead of $83.
  • ForLaval (STL) and Longueuil(RTL): $108instead of $135.

The reduced rates will also apply to theConseil rgional de transport de Lanaudire (CRTL) and the Rseau de transport mtropolitain (RTM).

The change was made following amendments last year to Bill 76, passedlast year at the National Assembly.

The reduced ratesareexpected to cost the province $3.4 million, according tothe regional transit authority, theAutorit rgionale de transport mtropolitain.
