Verdun calls for clothes, toys after Christmas Day fire

The borough of Verdun is calling for donationsafter a fire on Christmas Day forced about 50 people from their homes.

Montreal police say the fire started Friday night in a locker on the third floor of a three-story row house before it spread to the roof and three other units.

Verdun is now collecting clothes, toys and furniture for residents whose homes were damaged after 24 apartment units were evacuated. Damages are estimated to be as high as $500,000.

Jean-Franois Parenteau, the Verdunborough mayor, posted on Facebook thathe will be accepting donations throughout the weekend.

Donations can be dropped off at 4718 Wellington Street this weekendfrom noon to 5 p.m.and during normal opening hours on weekdays.

Police say the cause of the fire is not known,but it is suspicious.

An investigation is underway.
