No evidence of allegations levelled by police union boss against Liberal MNAs, SQ finds

The president of the Montreal police brotherhoodrocked Quebec's political establishment earlier this year with allegations that two senior members of the Liberal Partyavoided charges ofillegal fundraising because of theirconnections.

An investigation led by theSret du Qubecinto those allegations, however, has turned up empty.

The SQ saidTuesday it'sfound no evidence to support Yves Francoeur'sclaims.

Quebec Public Security Minister Martin Coiteuxordered the investigation after the police union boss'sremarksset off a firestorm of controversy at the National Assembly.

Francoeur contended that two MNAs, who he later identified as one-time finance minister Raymond Bachandand current Liberal house leader Jean-MarcFournier,were the subject ofapoliceinvestigation that started in 2012.

He said the investigationlinked the twoMNAsto an illegal fundraising scheme involving a real-estate company withtiesto organized crime.

Francoeursaid charges should have been laidbut weren't, because the menwere elected Liberal members of the National Assembly.

Fournierand Bachanddenied the allegations.

In a statement Tuesday, Francoeur acknowledged the investigation's findings andoffered no further comment.
