Bus fare prices up in Fredericton, Moncton

Codiac Transpo in Moncton and Fredericton's transit system bothraised bus faresby 25 cents on Monday.

Cash fare will now be $2.25.

Sandy MacNeill, transit manager for the City of Fredericton, says the city had to put prices up to deal with rising expenses.

"We had a huge fuel shock earlier in 2011," MacNeill said."As well, wages increase [and]there are other utilities that are associated with running the operation that increase over time."

In Moncton, Codiac Transpo's fuel costs went up by $300,000 in 2011.

"What we try to do is not shock the consumers, so we want to increase fares gradually as our expenses increase," he said.

The last fare increase was in 2006.
