Group wants more help for low-income N.B. residents

An anti-poverty group isaskingthe government to improve servicesfor low-income New Brunswickers.

The Voice of Real Poverty has put forward three recommendations to fix what it calls a "broken, inhumane system."

It's calling for renewable grocery gift cards to eligible low-income families so they can purchase their own food.

It also suggests the creation of a housing supplement and database, which wouldprovide families with monthly funds to apply to housing costs.

The group calls for the establishment of a social development authorityto be run similarly to public health authorities.

The group's president, Bethany Thorne-Dykstra, said the recommendations are steps toward ensuring everyone's basic needs are met.

It's unclear how the group was getting in touch with government officials.
