The safety of a section of St. Anne's Point Drive in Fredericton that has seen two fatal accidents since 2009 should should be reviewed, Fredericton Mayor Mike O'Brien said Monday.

A 24-year-old woman was found dead in the St. John River on Sunday following a 4 a.m. accident on the sweeping 90-degree curve at the foot of Regent Street.

In 2009, three men were killed when theircar went into the river in virtually the same place, also in the middle of the night.

"All I can say at this moment is there appears to be some kind of pattern there," O'Brien said Monday on Information Morning Fredericton."It's unfortunate."

O'Brien acknowledged he is not an investigator or a highway engineer, but wondered why there haven't been similar incidents at the turn at the opposite end of St. Anne's Point Drive.

"Why there as opposed to, say, Smythe Street?" said O'Brien. "People can come down Smythe and go along the water so I don't understand.

"I think it's incumbent on us to take a look at that corner that's owned by the province of New Brunswick technically, but of course it is city drivers that are there."

O'Brien said the city will be asking for a review to take place, but doesn't know what form that may take.

Fredericton police said speed and alcohol were contributing factors in the 2009 crash and in last Friday's crash.

Marc-AndrDoucet, 26, has been charged with impaired driving in connection with Friday's crash, which killed a woman identified by family members as Jennifer Brewer.
