Mini-library pops up in Sackville

A new mini-library is giving the people of Sackville access to books, free of charge with no worry of late fees.

It's called the Little Free Library and it operates similar to a book exchange.

Julie Ridlington and her family wanted to create a memorial for Edith Doncaster, who wasa cherished babysitter who died in 2011.

Ridlington says Doncaster was like family to her.

"One of the big things we'd always do, we'd always go to the library, pick out your stack of books and then with Aunt Edith, we'd sit and read or have quiet moments," she said.

"It's a nice little reminder that's around for the community too."

The library is one of more than 2,500 that have popped up all over the world. There are two in New Brunswick.

The mini-library looks like a miniature house, complete with shingles.

It's posted outside, on a pole, low enough for children to reach inside.

Sharon Hachey, president of the Tantramar Family Resource Centre, where the library is set up, said she would like to see little free libraries pop up all over town.

"So you take it, you use it if you want to bring it back then I guess it's kind of like borrowing it or you can choose to pass it on to someone else," Hachey said.

Ridlington says she and her family are pleased there's a place where Doncaster's love of reading can live on.
