N.B. Tories promise catastrophic drug plan

New Brunswick's Progressive Conservative Party promised Wednesday to cover the cost of catastrophic drugs for people without insurance coverage.

The promise comes one day after theLiberals annouced their plan to fund a universal prescription drug program, including paying for catastrophic drug costs.

Tory Leader David Alward said the Liberal plan falls short.

"Such a plan will not begin until the very earliest 2012, and based on the Liberal Party's comments, it seems to depend on some sort of tax or levy on New Brunswick businesses," Alward said Wednesday.

"Folks, this is too little, too late for many New Brunswick families who need help now."

Alward saidhis party'splan would be paid for by taxpayers, but didn't say what the plan would cost.

He also wasn't clear on when his plan would be set up.

Alward said it would happen immediately, but he also said he'd consult stakeholders on the criteria for the program and that would be done "within a year."

Liberal Leader Shawn Graham announced his party's plan Tuesday in Riverview. He also did not say how much it would cost to implement.

The provincial election takes place Sept. 27.
