New Brunswick has 52 new cases ofCOVID-19andthird doses of mRNA vaccines will now be offered to people who are moderately to severely immunocompromised because ofa medical condition or treatment, Public Health announced Thursday.

"These immunocompromised individuals may have a reduced immune response to COVID-19 vaccines," Dr. Jennifer Russell, chief medical officer of health, said in a statement. "An additional dose provides an opportunity for these individuals to develop a better immune response, which could offer better protection."

Some of the people who qualify include those who are receiving chemotherapyorimmune therapyfor cancer, solid organ transplant recipients whoarereceiving chemotherapy or other immunosuppressive therapy, and thoseliving with untreated or advanced HIV infection or AIDS, according to a news release.

People who were born with moderate or severe dysfunction of their immune system, are taking certain medications that severely affect the immune system, or who have chronic conditions associated with varying degrees of immune deficit, such as asplenia and chronic renal disease with dialysis, also qualify.

A full list is available on the government's website.

The move follows new guidance fromthe National Advisory Committee on Immunization, also known as NACI, released on Sept. 10.

The national advisory body on vaccines now recommendsmoderately to severely immunocompromised Canadians should be vaccinated with a primary series of three doses of an authorized mRNA-based vaccine, which includes those from Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna.

For those who have already had a two-dose series, NACI recommends providing a third dose, ideally of an mRNA vaccine but the committee stressed this should not be considered a "booster."

The goal is to providean extra shot to people who "may have somewhat lower responses to their first vaccinations," chairDr. Shelley Deekshad explained.

Some other jurisdictions, such as Prince Edward Island, Ontario, Alberta, Yukon and Manitoba are already offering additional shots for certain vulnerable populations.

New Brunswickers who are at least 12 years old with one or more of the conditions or treatments outlinedcan register online for a third vaccinethrough a regional health authority clinic or a participating pharmacy. Theywill haveto sign a statement attesting that they meet the eligibility criteria.

The recommended interval for a third dose of an mRNA vaccine for immunocompromised people is at least four weeks after their second dose, according to the release.

NACIhas not yetreached a decision on whether third shots should be provided to the broader population.

What to do if you have a symptom

People concerned they might have COVID-19 cantake a self-assessment test online.

Public Health says symptoms of the illness have included a fever above 38 C, a new or worsening cough, sore throat, runny nose, headache, a new onset of fatigue, and difficulty breathing.

In children, symptoms have also included purple markings on the fingers and toes.

People with one of those symptoms should stay at home, call 811 or their doctor and follow instructions.
