Rare orange lobster caught in Bay of Fundy

A rare orange lobster was trapped in the Bay of Fundy on Friday and is now on display in Alma.

The distinctly-coloured lobster can be seen at the Alma Lobster Shop.

Keisha Lomond, an employee at the lobster store, said the rare lobster will be spared from a pot of boiling water.

"We're just going to keep it to show people," Lomond said.

The lobster, however, is being kept in the same tank as all the other lobsters that are caught and are up for sale at the store.

Lomond said the lobster is already drawing people into the store.

The 5.4-pound lobster does not have a name and Lomond said she's not sure if the uniquecrustacean will be given a special name.

Orange lobsters are considered the rarest of rareand the chances of seeing one are believed to be one in 10 million.

By comparison,blue lobsters are considered one in five million, according to the Department of Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fisheries.

The orange colouration is caused by a genetic defect.

A blue lobster was caught off the coast of Antigonish, N.S., earlier this month.
