Revamped Robert Burns statue unveiled

A remodelled statue of the Scottish poet Robert Burns was unveiled Saturday in Fredericton.

A remodelled statue of the Scottish poet Robert Burns was unveiled Saturday in Fredericton.

The 100-year-old sculpture had to be taken down in 2008 for repairs.

The statue's future was uncertain when the city announced itcould not afford the $80,000 in flood-proofing the statue needed.

Businessman J.K. Irving and his wife Jean donated the moneyto replace the statue, andJean Irvingwas given the honour of pulling the tartan off Burns.

"It's our heritage, and J.K.'s heritage, and the children's heritage, some of them over here," said Jean Irving. "We thank you for this honour, that we can come and participate with you and enjoy this day, the unveiling of the laddy, the wee laddy ofBobby Burns."

The City of Fredericton closed a section of Queen Street for a parade in Burns's honour.

There will be a celebratory reception and dinner Saturday evening.

Robert Burns Day is celebrated every Jan. 25th in the area around the statue.
